Follow Up

November 4-6

Ginger has been on a rollercoaster, with decisions being made and changed, and a lot of hurry up and wait going on.  The original plan was for the surgery to be performed in Merida because all the stateside doctors agreed that she shouldn't travel until it was stabilized.  It would havd meant staying in Merida for a month before she could fly home.  It took almost three days for the local surgeon to decide it was going to be a much bigger deal than he had thought. After lots of discussions it was finally agreed that she should have the surgery in Atlanta because it is much to complicated to be done here.  The hospital in Atlanta, Grady, is a level one trauma center and much better equipped to deal with removing her knee replacement and installing a new and larger one as well as a prosthesis to stabilize her femur. Then began the negotiations with the Atlanta hospital and the insurance company and the hospital in Merida.  It took Ginger finally breaking down in tears to get the wheels sufficiently greased.  As of Thursday night she is scheduled to leave Merida at 8:30 Friday morning and be received at Grady by 2:00 in the afternoon.

I just FaceTimed with Ginger and she is in high spirits and ready to depart in the morning!!

I'll add to this as the journey continues...

Ginger flew in a medical jet with two EMTs to Atlanta where she was transferred by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, a level one trauma center.  Ben was there to greet her with a Welcome Fall balloon tht he had modified to read Sorry about the Un-Welcome Fall!!

She is in a cubicle with curtains for walls and will be there for 24-48 hours while they decide what they will do in the operating room.  One trauma doctor has seen her already and she's had more x-rays. We FaceTimed this evening and she is in great spirits;  she's very happy to be back in Atlanta, even if Grady is in a rather sketchy part of the city.  When she arrived they were leading a guy out in handcuffs!

And this from Ginger herself!!

There has probably never been anyone so happy to be here at Grady! They have me all hooked up to all kinds of wires which makes it hard to type. They have me on a NPO non-diet because they haven't decided yet if they are doing surgery in the next 12 hours. So far today, I've ha d a banana and a small bag of chips and it's 8;39 PM. The VIP medical flight was the smoothest flight I've ever experienced. No complimentary wine though. It really was an awesome great trip and I so enjoyed sharing it with such wonderful, loving people
